A

I used to be the shyest person in the world. I would hide behind my elder sister whenever I met a stranger. When I was asked to speak in class, I could hardly breathe, much less speak.

Then, in seventh grade, my sister suggested I take voice lessons. After thinking carefully, I did and tried to keep it a secret.

I began a series of exercises, making sounds so strange that I couldn't help laughing. I learned how to howl (吼叫) like a cowboy and snort (讥讽 ) like an old lady. By playing around with sound in the class, I got confidence in my voice. A few months later, I was asked to sing for some old people. I thought I would do better than before because of the voice lessons. I opened my mouth, I couldn't remember the words. My face turned red.

Then the thought struck me. I've embarrassed myself enough in front of this crowd. There's really nothing else to lose. So, for my second song, I just relaxed myself and felt the energy of the song lift me. And I did much better.

After that, I started singing to myself as loudly as I could in my room. That's something I had never done before.

I am not a shy person any more. Singing has made me more outgoing. I believe we overcome our shortcomings.

44. What can you learn from the passage?

Most painters discover a style of painting that suits them and stick to that, especially if people admire their pictures. But Picasso, the great Spanish painter, was like a man who had not yet found his own particular style of painting. He kept on struggling to find the perfect expression till his death in 1973.
Some of Picasso's paintings are rich, soft colored and beautiful. Others are ugly, cruel and strange. But such paintings allow us to imagine things for ourselves. They force us to say to ourselves,“What does he see that makes him paint like that?” And we begin to look beneath the surface of the things we see.
Picasso painted thousands of pictures in different styles. Sometimes he painted the natural look of things. Sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces. He showed us what the mind knows as well as what the eyes see. At the age of 90, he remained as curious about the world as he had been when he was young. That is why people have called him “the youngest painter in the world.”
45.What does the writer want to tell us according to the passage?
A. About Picasso’s style of paining.
B. About some different pictures.
C. It is not easy for a painter to find his own style.

D. Picasso did not find his own particular style.
46. Why did people call Picasso “the youngest painter in the word”?
A. Because he looked young when he was old.
B. Because he observed things with his eyes.
C. Because he never gave up looking for something new.
D. Because he never stopped painting even when he was old.
47. What does the writer think of Picasso’s painting?
A. He doesn’t understand any of them.
B. He admires them, including the ugly ones .
C. He thinks some of them are valuable while some are not.
D. He doesn’t like them, but he admires the painter.

An English idiom says, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” But scientists have discovered that isn’t true. Older people can learn, and they should, in order to keep their brain active. Now a new trend as began in several states in the US that encourages learning. Adults can attend One Day University. They can spend a Saturday or Sunday listening to four 70-minute lectures. Each one is given by a top university professor. One of the original participants said, “it’s like a health club for the brain.” Also, universities like MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) have made all of their courses and lectures available online for free! Libraries offer learning programs, too. With so much available, there is no excuse not to learn.

Leaning is habit. Don’t leave it behind after you left school. On the website lifehack.org. author Scott Young mentions several things to help you.

Always have a book. It doesn’t matter if you read fast or slow. Just read. If you read just one book a week, you will read 52 over the course of a year. Think of the knowledge you will gain.

Practice it. As you read, do something with what you have learned. Don’t just enjoy the mental exercise. Use the knowledge. If you read about painting, try it.

Make a “to learn” list. Compose a “to learn” list for yourself. Maybe you want to speak better English, pay the piano and cook French food.  Whatever interests you, put it on your list and then make the time to do it.

Teach others. Whatever you learn, teach someone else. You’ll not only help others but also understand what you’ve learned.
