Study is a long process which needs tenacity and courage. TOEFL learning is not an exception. Only through a long term of diligent study can we achieve our own goals. Below is some of my experience from TOEFL study and prep.

READING: Reading is the base of writing. If we do not reading enough, excellent writing skills will not come into being. Thus, the significance of reading is beyond question. I recommend reading some magazines, such as The Economist and Scientific American, which do not only boost our reading and writing, but also effectively complement our knowledge about science, a popular topic of TOEFL reading. If we can stick to reading these materials at least half an hour a day, we will find ourselves on a totally different level after a period of time.

WRITING: As is mentioned, writing is the natural production of reading. Through reading, we can familiarize with standard languages and thus hone our writing skills. In addition to reading, practicing a lot is also inevitable. Without practicing, skills taught by teachers and learned from reading are only words our notebooks rather than our own abilities. When I prepared for writing, I wrote one passage every day. Clinging to this amount of practice, I prepared for writing for only a little more than a week.

LISTENING: Just like the intimate relationship between reading and writing, listening and speaking are another pair. Colloquial languages learned from listening can be used when speaking. Considering the types of TOEFL listening, I watched some sitcoms and documentaries to practice conversations and lectures, respectively. However, in my opinion, more helpful than mindlessly listening to a lot of materials is repeatedly listening to one material, and following its script until completely understand it.

SPEAKING: Speaking is relatively the easiest to improve among the four parts. My method is to record my answers and revise them again and again until no explicit errors exist in them. Using this method, I only used less than one week before the exam to prepare the speaking part. Thus, this is the way I strongly recommend if you have trouble with your speaking.
